Choosing The Right Fin Size 

Sizing is where a setup goes right or wrong. 

A common guideline is to match the centre fin size in inches to the board length in feet. For example, a nine-foot longboard often pairs well with a nine-inch single fin. The ideal size also depends on factors such as surfer weight, wave conditions, and the board's outline and rocker. 

In a 2+1, you drop that centre fin down, often to six and a half or seven inches, because the side bites are already adding hold and a full-size centre on top of them makes the tail stiff. 

The bigger the board, the more total fin area it wants, so scale up for a longer log and down for a shorter one. Both a single fin and the centre of a 2+1 sit in the same US box, so one board can run either.
