How To Install Fin Boxes Into A Board

People often use the phrase installing fins to describe two different jobs. One is fitting a fin into an existing box. The other, and more permanent, task is installing the fin boxes themselves during the board-building process. This is the second one. Knowing how to install fin boxes is what separates a board that holds its fins for years from one that blows a box on the first solid wave.

Boxes First, Fins Later

Fin boxes and plugs go into the board during the build, routed into the foam and set in resin before or during glassing, long before a fin ever touches them. This is where fin boxes are installed into the board. It is a different task from fitting fins, which we cover separately. Once a box is glassed in, it is permanent, so the time to get it right is now, at the install, not later.

Start With Fin Placement

Before any cutting, mark your fin placement. Most blank manufacturers, fin system suppliers, and shaping guides provide recommended measurements: the distance up from the tail, the spacing across, the toe-in that slightly points the side fins toward the nose, and the cant that leans them out. Measure carefully using a tape measure, straightedge, or layout square before marking the blank. A box glassed a few millimetres off, or with the wrong toe, changes how your surfboard fins perform, and unlike a fin, you cannot swap it back.

Rout The Cavity Clean

With placement marked, rout the cavity to the depth required by the system, using the correct router jig for your fin system. A single-tab box needs one long channel, a dual-tab system needs two smaller plug holes per fin, and a US box needs a long centre channel. Rout to the specified depth for the system to ensure the box sits flush without weakening the surrounding foam. 

Bed The Box In Epoxy

Set the box in thickened epoxy resin. On an EPS blank, this has to be epoxy, because polyester resin reacts with and damages polystyrene foam. A filler resin such as the 111B epoxy laminating filler resin holds its shape in the cavity instead of slumping away from the box while it cures, which is what you want when you are bedding hardware into foam. 

Wet out the cavity, seat the box with no trapped air underneath, and hold it flush and at the correct cant until the resin goes off. That clean bond is what stops a box from lifting or cracking out under load. This is the step that rewards patience over speed. 

When To Install Fin Boxes In The Build

Installation timing varies with the fin system and the builder's glassing process. Some boxes are installed before lamination so the cloth overlaps them, while others may be fitted later in the build. Always follow the installation method recommended by the fin system manufacturer. 

Getting Your Fin Box Install Right
