The Surfboard Glassing Supplies Every First Board Needs

The moment the hardener goes into the resin, the clock starts. From that point, you have a limited window to wet out the cloth, work it flat, and complete the rail laps before the resin begins to cure. A successful glass job often comes down to those few minutes, but much of the outcome is decided long before that, when you are choosing the materials on your workbench.

Good surfboard glassing supplies will not instantly make you a better glasser, but the wrong ones can make every step more difficult.

The Cloth Is The Skeleton

Everything else exists to support the cloth. Fibreglass cloth provides most of the board's structural strength, while the resin bonds those fibres together into a rigid composite that protects the blank and gives the board its finished shape. 

Most surfboards are built using one of two types of cloth: E-Glass or S-Glass. E-Glass is the industry standard and suits most boards. S-Glass offers greater strength and stiffness for a similar weight, making it a popular choice for higher-performance builds where additional durability justifies the extra cost.

S-Glass offers greater strength and stiffness for a similar weight. Reinforcement can also run in one direction only, and SX S-Glass uni-directional tape lays fibres along a single axis to stiffen a high-load area like the centre of the deck without a full extra layer across the whole board. 

Fibreglass cloth is sold by weight in ounces, and that is one of the first decisions you will make. A 4-oz deck paired with a 4-oz bottom creates a light, responsive board. A 5oz surfboard fibreglass sits a step up from there, adding durability without the weight jump of going to 6-oz, which is why a lot of first boards land on it. Adding another layer increases durability again, although it also adds weight. 

This combination of cloth weights is known as the glass schedule. More layers provide greater strength and impact resistance, while fewer layers reduce weight and increase responsiveness. There is no universally correct glass schedule. The right choice depends on the surfer, the board design, the waves it is intended for, and the balance between durability and performance.

Epoxy Is the Glue That Holds It All Together 

If you are glassing an EPS blank, your resin choice is already made. EPS foam must be glassed with epoxy because polyester resin reacts with and damages polystyrene foam.

Epoxy surfboard resin is a two-part system consisting of resin and hardener, mixed to a specific ratio rather than with a catalyst. It offers a practical working time for first-time builders while producing a strong, impact-resistant laminate. Although the board can usually be handled after several hours, allowing it to cure for around a week helps it reach its full strength.

If you want to better understand how fibreglass cloth and epoxy resin work together as a single composite skin rather than as separate materials, it is well worth reading about the process before your first lamination.

The same epoxy resin is also used to bond fin boxes into the board before the surfboard fins are installed later in the build. It is usually worth buying a little more resin than the calculator suggests. A lamination starved of resin creates weak, dry areas, while running out halfway through a lamination can quickly ruin the job.

The Small Tools Decide The Finish

Some of the least expensive surfboard glassing supplies often have the biggest impact on the quality of the finished lamination. 

A set of resin squeegees and disposable brushes does the real work of moving resin through the weave while removing the excess. A flexible squeegee helps wet the cloth evenly, while a firmer one pulls away excess resin, making the cloth transparent rather than cloudy. 

Simple chip brushes are useful for working resin into the laps and around complex curves such as the nose and tail. A sharp pair of scissors cleanly cuts the fibreglass cloth without pulling loose fibres from the weave.

None of these tools is particularly expensive, yet each one contributes to a cleaner, more consistent finish.

It also pays to keep spare tools nearby. Squeegees eventually warp, brushes quickly harden with cured resin, and there is never a convenient time to search for replacements while working on a wet lamination.
